As a writer, I recognize the power of my words to move and inform readers around a given subject.
Why, then, did it take me so many years to embrace the fact that when I write my intentions for the future, that this, too, is a source of power?
Through writing my desires, I focus on what I want. I focus my energy and attention towards making that come to pass. By putting it into the world in a tangible, physical way, that desire physically becomes a part of my world and my awareness.
It feels real because it is real.
A few months ago, I found old journal outlines mapping out what became my next several books: YEARS before I ever got a book deal or even a glimmer of possibility that I would write them. I love to journal about future plans and desires in part because it’s incredible to see those desires mirrored back in my reality later on (if you haven’t seen my free resource on vision journaling, go here):
I love to look back on old journals and let myself be amazed at the fact that those things that felt completely pie-in-the-sky actually happened way more often than I would think (or if they didn’t, there was a good reason).
And yet, knowing this, I still would resist writing out my desires because it felt silly, or it seemed impossible that it would change anything.
This is my reminder to me, and to you, to set aside those worries and write it into being.
The life we desire that feels delusional to even imagine is possible, if we just let ourselves believe it.
Write it into being. Imagine it happening. Tell yourself “it happened” and let yourself feel, physically and emotionally, the feelings of success.
Don’t just write out the thing you want: Write out how it makes you FEEL.
Abundant wealth doesn’t just mean I have a full bank account, it makes me feel safe, secure, and like I have more options and flexibility (and can do more fun stuff).
Successful book sales don’t just mean sales figures, they mean my work is reaching and serving people, and are evidence that I’m following my calling.
A successful business doesn’t just mean lots of clients, it means I can do work I find joy in, and make money doing what brings me pleasure and what I know best helps the people I want to support.
It doesn’t just mean success as an abstract concept; it’s the ability to feel secure, to feel pride in my work, to feel like my creativity is a productive way to spend my time, etc.
When you think of what we desire, can you turn your attention not towards anchoring success to a specific outcome, but towards the way you want to feel and move through the world?
Do it once, then repeat it often.
Another option: If you have a tendency to exercise control over your visioning (so for example, saying “XYZ needs to happen for this to be a great week,”) choose to release that expectation of yourself.
Make the decision that this week is great, that good things happen to you, or that you feel secure and stable, or that you are paid for doing work you love (or whatever), and then let yourself feel and believe it as a general truth that just *is*, not one that relies on an exact series of events. Don’t worry about attaching it to a specific outcome, just keep saying the week is great, and use every great thing that happens as evidence that it’s a great week.
Focus on the feeling and let the good things you feel be mirrored back to you.
This is not gaslighting ourselves by saying ‘good vibes only’ or ‘just be happy!’ But instead, making a conscious choice to continuously redirect attention towards the belief that good things are happening, and actively seeking evidence of those good things so we’re in a receptive state to let even more good stuff happen.
I’ve been focusing totally on my pie-in-the-sky, delulu imaginings for the last week, and so far my business has made more sales than in a usual week, I got some very good personal news, and I received three unexpected gifts in the mail.
Each time I feel gratitude (did you know when you order a class from me, even if it’s just a free download, I cast a little spell for your abundance? It’s true!), and point to it as evidence that my imagined life is actually my real, lived life.
In Symbiosis and in The Mycelia Writers’ Coven recently we’ve done meditations to meet our future creative selves, not just to give ourselves a clear archetype for what success means to each of us…
But to remind us that we are already those successful, powerful creative leaders we dream of being. And that, by connecting with that energy, we have the roadmap to get there (you can also get a taste of this in my course bundles).
Writing my success stories as though they are my current reality is a big part of my road map this year.
What’s yours?
P.S. Symbiosis’ doors close this week so jump in now if you’ve been eyeing it! We’ll be going through December, and the program is about $100/month depending which plan you pick.
If you want the VIP version, which includes two private coaching sessions a month, a full day private coaching session after we end in December, a one-of-a-kind handmade oracle deck written and drawn just for you, and a box of herbal, fermented, and magical goodies…then I’d love to share it with you.
This special version isn’t on the website, and is only available by emailing me (julia@rootsandbranches.space) with a bit about yourself and your work, if we haven’t worked together before (if we have, just let me know you want it and I’ll add you in).
We also have space for you in the Mycelia Writers’ Coven, if you’re looking for a chill creative space to do monthly rituals, tap into the magic of your creative work, and be supported by a crew of delightful, successful writers from a whole range of paths and genres.
