If you’re ready for a big leap up, this is for you
At one point last year, I was feeling really stalled out as a creative person: My projects were all going fine, and I had new ideas, but none of them were really getting me excited. I was going through the motions, like I was back in an office job (which, guess what, I did not build a career on my creative work in order to feel like I’m stuck in a cubicle).
Since I write professionally and run creative businesses, feeling stalled out in my creative flow also meant feeling stalled out in my work.
Everyone does this sometimes: Even Nobel Laureates and Pulitzer winners I’ve worked with still wrangle with imposter syndrome, burnout, or with struggling to reconnect with what they love about writing.
Writers, and all creatives, however long they’ve done it and however well known they are, still have to wrangle with doubt, or fear, or stalling out (the specifics of how that feels and manifests just shifts at different points).
So yes, you in 10 years will indeed cycle back to revisit some of those things but guess what? That isn’t a bad thing: Because every time you do you get a chance to learn more about how and what you create.
It’s a process of self-discovery and for some people, also an initiation into new levels of creativity if you’re willing to navigate through to the other side (there is an easier way though: More on that in a second).
So what do you do when you feel stuck?
Having a toolbox of habits and skills that you’ve built up when you’re feeling resourced and have the bandwidth to invest in them helps a lot (it’s like exercise, or putting a few dollars in savings: Having a regular practice makes you more resilient when you need it).
I share some of my favorites below.
Sometimes (ok, most of the time), connecting to your creative magic in a semi-structured way is THE key.
I’m talking about that really deep inner work that’s like opening the floodgates and letting stream of ideas pouring out of you, as you’re just trying to capture as much of it as possible. That secret sauce that makes your work unique to you, that lights the fire in your belly and keeps it burning even when you hit road bumps: And carries you through to a finished creative project that’s better than your wildest dreams.
Of COURSE we all want to be connected to this creative magic, right? But sometimes it needs a little help to shine through again, and that’s where semi-structured practices come in.
Reconnecting with your creative magic isn’t about just banging at the keyboard hoping things will work ‘better’ at some point:
It’s entirely about getting your (over)thinking mind out of the way so your subconscious can come through, while giving yourself structured, consistent ways to record and express what you learn.
I spent YEARS figuring this out: And what I ended up with was a program specifically for creatives looking to connect to their own creative fire and inner wisdom, in a way that’s like a HUGE level up (seriously), and that offers a community space to practice accountability, get support, and celebrate yourself.
Whatever your creative practice, in whatever medium, Radical Creators will bring that magic back into your life through a daily practice, that connects you to your inner creative wisdom while also helping you foster that connection regularly: So it’s a lasting, guiding force for the rest of your life.
Radical Creators combines a simple daily practice: A guided meditation (you have two to choose from!) plus a daily journal to reflect on what came through.
By doing the meditation, then following the guidance you receive in your creative practice, you can absolutely transform what you’re creating, how you’re creating it, AND how you feel about it, all in just 21 days (trust me: I tested this program out before launching it and I have never felt more in my flow).
You get lifetime access to the meditations and all the resources, plus I share regular deep dives into the creative process (I listen to these like podcasts while I’m running errands or working out), so you can home in on specific parts of your creative work and strengthen all the work you’re doing in your meditative practice.
It’s just $21 for the next two days (then the price doubles), so if you’re wanting to join us, this is the moment!
P.S. if you want to REALLY commit to a regular creative practice this year, but in a way that won’t burn you out or stress you out…
Symbiosis is a six month program where we build on the hyperspeed level-up experience of Radical Creators, and use that new level of creative growth as the foundation for a consistent, playful, and productive creative practice over the course of 6 months.
Everyone who joins Symbiosis this week gets Radical Creators for free: And the combination of the two will radically shift your creativity for the better, for the rest of your life.
Think of Radical Creators as a rocket ship that launches you to a new level of creativity you never imagined, and Symbiosis as the work you do to build a deeply interconnected and nourishing ecosystem in that new part of your inner world.
P.P.S. I have 1, 3, and 6 month payment plans available, plus one first-come-first-served sliding scale space for a creative who needs a bit of extra support.
Email me (julia@root-kitchens.com) if you need either one!
Some of my favorite tools for finding momentum
Here are a few quick links to some of my favorite practices for reconnecting to my own creative flow:
Focusing attention, focusing energy, noticing (and incrementally shifting) your emotional state as you work, connecting to the earth, building inner fire, and of course, The Scary Door.
And: Remembering why I create and who it serves (see also: your ideal reader and work), intuitive writing, the pleasure of boundaries, and building a regenerative creative ecosystem.
Which of these tools is your favorite?
